An accessible ramp provides a safe step-free change in level. It must have a manageable slope, enough clear width, level landings, secure handrails where required, edge protection, drainage and a slip-resistant surface. A steep board placed over steps is not an accessible ramp.

Understanding a 1:12 slope
A 1:12 slope means one unit of vertical rise for at least twelve units of horizontal run. A 300 mm rise therefore needs at least 3600 mm of ramp run, plus landings. Gentler slopes reduce effort and improve safety. Do not use the diagonal surface length to calculate the ratio.

Place the ramp on the normal route to the entrance or destination, not around a remote service area. Provide a compliant approach at both ends. Avoid layouts where users must cross vehicle paths or make unnecessary turns.
